Our Story
The Anna Khasu Empowerment Centre is a nonprofit company (NPC) dedicated to uplifting underprivileged communities in Naledi, Soweto, and beyond. Inspired by the legacy of Mme Anna Khasu, who founded St John's Educare Centre in Naledi Extension in 1982, we continue her mission of nurturing children, empowering women, caring for the elderly, and building stronger communities.
Guided by our motto "A dream realized, The Legacy continues…", we focus on:
We focus on:
- Early Childhood Development (ECD): Supporting over 70 centres across Soweto, Lenasia, Vlakfontein, Noordgesig, and Lawley through capacity building and resource mobilization.
- Community Empowerment: Providing Entrepreneurship skills training and initiatives for women and youth. The organisation also manages a 2,303-square-metre community vegetable garden to encourage sustainable livelihoods reducing poverty by 15%.
- Social Support: Operating a soup kitchen for children from vulnerable families and the elderly.
- Sports and Arts Programs in the townships: We coordinate sports games and arts workshops in ECD Centres and in communities during school holidays to encourage recreational activities in communities to expose them to activities children and youth can engage in to have a sense of belonging.
- Founded in memory of Anna Khasu by Disemelo Makhanda, Nkotseng Hanyane, and Nkululeko Nkutha, our centre at 2657 Tlhathane Street, Naledi Extension continues to impact the community positively.
